Kremlin: Putin and Trump to discuss Syria at next meeting

Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump’s meeting at the APEC Summit in Vietnam is necessary in order for them to discuss the Syrian problem, said Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov, as reported by Interfax.

Peskov emphasized that in US-Russian relations many matters have accumulated which require discussion by the heads of state. It is thus in the interests of both countries “for both presidents to find an opportunity for more or less prolonged communication”, he remarked.
The two presidents will use the meeting to discuss the matter of a resolution in Syria. Peskov noted that there have recently been several positive changes in Syria which must be spoken about at the highest level. “This will require joint efforts to bring it to a new level of quality with respect to the resolution. It all requires some kind of cooperation,” said the Russian president’s press secretary.

The two presidents may meet at the APEC Summit in Vietnam, which will take place from 6-11 November. Yesterday in an interview with reporters, Trump remarked on the importance of a possible meeting with the Russian president. “Putin is very important because he can help us with North Korea. He can help us in Syria, and we have to talk about Ukraine,” the US President said.

The Kremlin does not exclude the possibility of the presidents meeting in Vietnam. One of the results of the meeting was the agreement to create de-escalation zones in Syria.

The first meeting between Trump and Putin took place in July at G20 meeting in Hamburg. One of the results of the meeting was the agreement on the establishment of zones of de-escalation in Syria.
