German politicians criticized the expansion plan for Nord Stream 2

A German politician from the Alliance 90/The Greens Party, Reinhard Bütikofer, stated that the Russian Federation funds the export of war through the export of energy resources. According to him, it is unacceptable to express favor to this country and provide support on economic issues at a time when the whole world is outraged by the role of Russia in Aleppo, Frankfurter Allgemeine reported.

Frankfurter Allgemeine also quoted the Chairman of Bundestag’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, Norbert Röttgen, who accused the German Government and the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, personally, of ignoring the interests of the Eastern European States.

“I believe the point of view of the Federal Government, who indicate that the Nord Stream 2 is a private project that has nothing to do with politics, to be unacceptable and provocative,” the politician stated. Norbert Röttgen is convinced that the gas pipeline directly impacts the interests of Poland, Ukraine and the Baltic States.

“The ignoring of the interests of the Eastern European States can lead to the escalation of tensions inside the European Union,” Röttgen believes. According to him, Russia’s actions in eastern Ukraine and its participation in the Syrian war shouldn’t go unpunished.

“We can’t encourage Russia to continue to violate international and military law,” the German politician summarized. The Nord Stream 2 is a gas pipeline project that will run from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea.
