Macron calls on Putin to find humanitarian solution to Sentsov case

On Friday, during the phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Emmanuel Macron spoke about the Ukrainian political prisoner Oleg Sentsov.

Macron called on Putin to find a humanitarian solution to the case of the Ukrainian filmmaker, who was sentenced to imprisonment in Russia and has been on a hunger strike for three months, reported the Deutsche Welle.

Macron expressed concern about the fact that Sentsov’s health has worsened critically, announced the Elysee Palace.

The French President made several suggestions to Putin, who promised “to report on Sentsov’s health soon”, the announcement said.

Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the two presidents spoke about Sentsov in a telephone call. However, he did not mention any details of their conversation.

Oleg Sentsov was detained in 2014 in the annexed Crimea and was charged with forming a terrorist community on the territory of the peninsula. In August 2015, he was sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment in a strict-regime colony by a court in Rostov-on-Don.

On May 14, 2018, Sentsov went on a hunger strike demanding the release of all Ukrainian political prisoners.

On July 13, Sentsov’s mother appealed to Putin asking him to pardon her son. The Kremlin promised to consider her appeal.
