Poland urges UN to send peacekeepers to Donbas
Polish Radio reports that during a meeting of ministers from European countries members of the UN Security Council with the head of the EU diplomatic department Federica Mogherini, the Polish Foreign, Minister Jacek Czaputowicz called on the participants to consider sending a UN peacekeeping mission to Ukraine.
“It is important for us to keep the issue of aggression against Ukraine on international forum agendas, including the UN. It would be good to consider new initiatives that will bring us closer to the resolution of this conflict, such as establishment of a UN peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, or also appointing a special representative of the UN Secretary-General envoy for Ukraine,” Czaputowicz emphasized.
During the Polish presidency in the UN Security Council in May 2018, there was a criticism against Russia’s aggressive behavior. Minister Czaputowicz stated that next month, debates regarding territories of Ukraine which are not under Kyiv’s control are scheduled at the meeting of the UN General Assembly,
Earlier, the OSCE outlined the details of the new peace plan for Donbas. Its author is the Special Representative and OSCE Chairperson in Ukraine Martin Sajdik. In addition to the joint mission of the UN and the OSCE (with military, police components and international administration in the so-called Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics), the new plan also provides for an independent agency organized by the European Union on the restoration of Donbas.
