Ukrainian MP Syroyid: Ukraine should recognize Russian occupation of its territories
The deputy chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Oksana Syroyid, stated on-air with 112 Ukraine news channel that Ukraine should legally recognize the occupation of its territories by Russia. “There is only one way out – to make the legal decision to recognize Russian occupation of that part of the Ukrainian territory and to name the occupant,” Syroyid noted.
According to her, if Ukraine fulfills the requirements of the Russian Federation (providing special status to part of the Donbas, granting amnesty to separatists, and permitting elections in the part of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions that are beyond Ukraine’s control) it would lead to legal surrender.
“The fact that Russia insists on this isn’t an implementation of the Minsk agreements and is not a solution to the conflict. It is an ordinary surrender. This means that the chosen path was wrong,” the deputy chairman of the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament of Ukraine) stressed. Syroyid also added that Ukraine should change its strategy regarding the settlement of military conflict in eastern Ukraine.
Earlier, the deputy minister for the temporarily occupied territories and internally displaced persons, George Tuka, stated that President of Russia Vladimir Putin seeks to return the occupied Donbas to Ukraine, but on his own terms.
