Ukraine and Georgia agree on the need to develop 'New Silk Road'

Ukraine and Georgia agreed on the need to continue to develop the New Silk Road; a rail route bypassing the Russian Federation, Ukraine’s Presidential Press Service said in a statement. It was noted that Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko discussed the issue with the Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili during a meeting in Germany.

The two leaders “have discussed key issues on the bilateral agenda and agreed to activate economic cooperation, in particular, the development of the route of the New Silk Road,” the statement said. Poroshenko and Kvirikashvili also discussed the plan for the next meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Ukrainian-Georgian Commission on Economic Cooperation, which is to be held later this year.

Poroshenko thanked Kvirikashvili for the humanitarian assistance that Georgia has provided to Ukraine throughout the conflict in the Donbas region.

Last month, a demonstration cargo train departed from Illichivsk via a the Ukraine-Georgia-Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan-China (through the Caspian and Black Seas) route.
