Dutch submarine monitored the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov

An official representative of the Russian Defense Ministry, Major-General Igor Konashenkov, stated that a submarine of the Netherlands Navy maneuvered near the Russian squadron in the Mediterranean Sea, trying to get closer to the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov.

“The Russian search-and-assault group spotted the Walrus –class diesel-electric submarine of the Netherlands Navy, which tried to get closer to the carrier battle group of the Northern Fleet,” TASS quoted the General as saying.

Konashenkov added that the large anti-submarine vessels Severomorsk and Vice-Admiral Kulakov spotted the submarine at the distance of 20 kilometers away from the Russian naval group and monitored it for over an hour.

The submarine tried to pull away from hydroacoustic contact but it failed despite all maneuvers. According to Konashenkov, this incident allowed the Russian group to complete anti-submarine maneuvers to defend the carriers.

The official representative of the Russian Defense Ministry also added that the clumsy maneuvering of the submarine could have resulted in negative navigation consequences without specifying what those consequences could have been.
