Security Service of Ukraine discloses account of surrendered Russian spy

Officials of the Security Service disclosed an attempt by Russian special services to recruit a resident of the Luhansk region, who worked in Russia.

According to the Security Service’s press service, the Ukrainian came to the attention of Russian special forces in late 2016 during an illegal stay in Russia.

“The man was unofficially employed in a company, and this fact was used to pressure him and coerce him to go against the interests of Ukraine,” the Security Service noted.

After the man was recruited, a Russian special services officer instructed him about his assignment, which was to return to Ukraine and  collect data on the geographical location of combat positions along with the number and quantity of personnel, armament, and military equipment of the Ukrainian Army in the Lysychansk area. After collecting this information, he was to return to Russia and give the data to the Russian special forces.

Additionally, while in Ukraine, the man was to organize the collection and transmission of information necessary for Russia through his relatives living in the Luhansk region.

For his cooperation with Russian special services, the officer guaranteed the Ukrainian man assistance in processing documents to obtain legal employment in Russia.

“However, on his return to Ukraine, the resident of the Luhansk region immediately went to the Security Service of Ukraine and told them about the circumstances of his recruitment by Russian special services. The man is released from criminal liability,” assured the Security Service.

The Security Service earlier disclosed the existence of a network of Russian agents in Transcarpathia. Russians were engaged in recruiting people to participate in paid rallies in support of making Transcarpathia an autonomous region.
