Lithuania rejects Steinmeier's arms limit proposal

Lithuania found the arms proposal for eastern Europe made by the German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, totally unacceptable. As the Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Linas Linkevičius, stated on Monday, September 5 in an interview with DPA (German Press Agency), the country “cannot be overloaded with additional limits and upper bounds.”

According to him, the situation in the region remains unstable. The leader of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs believes that Russia is still not adhering to the security agreement reached.

Linkevičius also noted that Lithuania’s defense capabilities should be strengthened because there are gaps at certain positions. He expressed doubt that now is the right time to discuss the issue of arms reduction.

At the end of August in an article for the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Steinmeier stated the necessity of imposing control over the arms build-up in Europe. In particular, he demanded that there be a limit to and control over the supply of arms in regions where extra caution is required to implement military policy. As an example of such a region, the German minister referred to the Baltic States.
