Dutch PM suggested that the agreement with Ukraine may not be signed

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has said that there is still a chance that the country will not sign the Association Agreement with Ukraine. This was reported by Dutch broadcaster, NOS.

Rutte did however express hope that the agreement will still be signed.

According to him, the results of April’s referendum in the Netherlands, with regard to the Association Agreement, were terrible.

“I am categorically against the referenda. I am also categorically, absolutely and completely against the referenda on multilateral agreements as they just do not make sense,” Rutte said.

During a consultative referendum held in the Netherlands on the 6th of April, 61% of voting Dutch citizens voted against the Association Agreement for Ukraine to join the European Union.

It was also reported that the Dutch government will not decide its position on the Association Agreement until the end of June.

The President of the European Commission (EC), Jean-Claude Juncker, has said that the government of the Netherlands, and not the EC, should develop an alternative plan based on the results of the referendum.
