Merkel and Trump discuss Ukraine during their meeting

German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated she and US President Donald Trump discussed the state of Ukraine during a recent conference, Ukrinform reports.

“Of course, we talked about Ukraine, which is where we work very closely together in regard to Russia’s actions concerning the occupation of Crimea and the situation in the east of Ukraine,” Merkel stated.

Merkel stated that she is pleased with the fact that the U.S. administration works very closely on this issue with its partners, which broadens the format of the Minsk agreements.

According to the Chancellor, Berlin and Washington share a great unity of opinion in terms of confrontation and conflict with Russia, and regarding the role of the Kremlin in Syria.

“No one is interested in not having good relations with Russia,” Merkel stated, “but when it comes to conflicts—such as the events happening in Ukraine, for example—the principle of territorial independence of the country must be respected.”

The German Chancellor mentioned that she is able to ask questions about the U.S.-imposed sanctions whenever they arise. She stated that during the adoption of sanctions in the U.S. Congress, there is an exchange of views, in particular, on assessing the consequences of measures for Europe through a dialogue with the Ministry of Finance.

“If there are further problems, I can talk about them with the president at any time,” Merkel assured.
