Elections for leader of separatist LPR to be held in fall 2018
Elections for the “head of the LPR” will be held in the fall of 2018, said the head of self-proclaimed separatist republic Leonid Pasechnik.
“I announce, with a great sense of responsibility, that I intend to participate in the autumn elections as a candidate for the leader of the Luhansk People’s Republic in order to fully fulfill the tasks set before us,” Russian news agency TASS quoted Pasenchik as saying.
According to the Constitution of the People’s Republic of Luhansk, its leader is elected for a term of four years and cannot hold this office for more than two consecutive terms. Pasechnik was appointed as leader of the LPR in November 2017 after Igor Plotnitsky was removed from the position.
Leonid Pasechnik is a former chief of the anti-smuggling division of the main “K” department of the Security Service of Ukraine in the Luhansk region. He joined the separatist side and headed the so-called “Ministry of State Security of the People’s Republic of Luhansk.” He has been on the Ukrainian wanted list since January 2015.
Elections in the Donetsk People’s Republic are also planned for the fall.
