The remains of Polish President Lech Kaczyński are to be exhumed

Polish Prosecutors stated that they will carry out the exhumation of the remains of Polish President Lech Kaczyński and other victims of the 2010 plane crash near Smolensk. Poland is looking to find new evidence to help investigators determine the cause of the crash, Radio Svoboda reports.

An inquiry by the previous government determined the tragedy was caused by a pilot error, but the current Law and Justice ruling party led by Kaczyński's twin brother, Jaroslaw, states that the crash may have been caused by an explosion on board.

On the 22nd of June the Polish Prosecutor’s Office stated that the autopsy reports they received from Russia are incomplete and in some cases erroneous, and don't explain the cause of the crash.

The plane crashed on the 10th of April 2010 in thick fog while landing near Smolensk. The plane crash took the lives of 96 people including Kaczyński and his wife, senior army officials, the head of the central bank and other politicians. Earlier, the Individual Interstate Aviation Committee of Poland and Russia defined the major reason for the crash as human error in adverse circumstances.

Russia did not return important evidence to Poland, including flight recorders and wreckage. Moscow states that they need these items for their own criminal proceedings in the case.
