Peskov: Russian aircraft carrier deployed to Syria may be used for more than protecting our bases
Our modern military equipment allows us to control the airspace over Syria even without the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, the ship has other tasks. This was stated by the Press Secretary of the Russian President, Dmitry Peskov, in his interview to Russian “Saturday News” TV show.
“I do not think that we have to chase someone there, that someone can carry out a strike,” he said while answering a question about the purpose of deployment of the aircraft carrier to Syria “This is because even now we have sufficient equipment to control the skies, ensure the security of our temporary infrastructure in Syria. There is no likelihood of such an attack [on our infrastructure]. And from the tactical point of view, the purpose of the mission of Admiral Kiuznetsov is probably somewhere in the folders with a “Classified” Seal,” Peskov continued.
In October, the Northern Fleet’s Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, followed by other warships, has sailed to the Mediterranean Sea. According to Russia's Defense Ministry, this flotilla also included the Pyotr Velikiy nuclear-powered missile cruiser, as well as the Severomorsk and Vice-Admiral Kulakov large anti-submarine ships.
