The Secretary of the Security Council of Russia, Nikolai Patrushev, stated that the USA seeks to weaken Russia by breaking it up.  

According to Patrushev, Americans want to gain access to the richest resources of the Russian Federation.  “The US Government specified its main objective – prevail in the world. That is why they don’t need a strong Russia. On the contrary, they want to weaken our country. Achievement of this objective by breaking up of Russia isn’t excluded. It would give the US access to the richest resources. According to the US, Russia has these resources unjustly,” he stated in his interview with Moskovsky Komsomolets.

Also according to Patrushev, the leadership of NATO follows American policy.  He states that Washington skilfully uses the anti-Russian orientation of the countries of the eastern flank of the North Atlantic unit to neutralize the most independent members of the Alliance.  These include France, Germany and Italy.  When journalists asked him if the US does indeed want to break Russia up, Patrushev responded, “Washington believes that it can play a catalytic role in this process."

Patrushev did, however, state that Russia is not interested in open confrontation with the West.  “Moreover, not only the pursuit to defend its interests, but also the pursuit to take into consideration the interests of its partners are at the heart of Russian foreign policy. The US is the initiator of the ongoing conflict.  Europe obeys its will,” Patrushev stressed.
