Latvia receives air defense radar systems from the US

Two more Sentinel mobile tactical air defense radars were delivered to Latvia, according to the Ministry of Defense of the Republic. These are able to detect low-flying targets including helicopters, missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.

According to BaltNews, the first radar was delivered to Latvia in June. The total cost of the project is about $22.7 million that includes four Sentinel radars, HMMWV vehicles and trailers, as well as operator and maintenance training.

Sentinel radars are improved systems used to alert and queue short range air defense weapons. The National Armed Forces of Latvia will use them with existing RBS-70 man-portable, air-defense systems, which are used for defense of critical infrastructure, air defense and as infantry support.

The new radar systems were delivered as part of a military cooperation agreement between Latvia and the USA. Washington has already financed two construction projects this year valued at 14 million euro at military bases in Ādaži and Lielvārde, which will be conducted by local construction companies.
