Latvia plans to build a fence along the border with Belarus

Latvian authorities are planning to start the construction of a fence at the border with Belarus, modeled after the barrier erected at the border with Russia. This was reported by Delfi with reference to the head of the State Border Guard of Latvia, Normunds Garbars.

Garbars noted that the expenses are already built into the budget for the following year. "The project will be realized on the same principles", the news agency writes. According to it, the construction of the fence will begin no earlier than in a year. The length of the Latvian-Belarusian border is about 173 km.

In December of last year, Latvia started the construction of fences at the border with Russia. Last spring, Latvian authorities erected first 3 km of fencing at the border with Russia. A total of 24 kilometers of fencing are scheduled to be built this year.

In order to limit the flow of illegal migrants, the Republic decided to build a total of 90 kilometers worth of fencing along some areas of the Russian border. 17 million euros will be spent on its erection over the next four years. The height of the fence will be 2.7 meters, including barbed wire. It will be installed with video cameras and motion sensors.
