Geoffrey Pyatt: The US is disappointed with the results of the Ukraine-EU referendum

Geoffrey Pyatt, the US Ambassador to Ukraine, expressed his country’s disappointment with the results of the consultative referendum on the Association Agreement between the EU and Ukraine held in the Netherlands. "Of course, we are disappointed with the result. But we respect democratic practices of the Netherlands,” Pyatt told journalists on Friday in Kiev.

According to him, the US continues to consider that the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU is "a good thing for Ukraine and Europe and the USA and their interests.”

"Thus, we will continue to support the implementation of the Association Agreement for Ukraine and the EU including Ukrainian steps towards essential areas such as the rule of law and fighting corruption,” he added.

According to the preliminary results of the referendum in the Netherlands, 61.1% of Dutch voters were against the ratification of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union while 38.1% voted in favor.
