Ukrainian President invites Georgia to encourage Europe to extend sanctions against Russia
President Petro Poroshenko held a meeting with Irakli Kobakhidze, Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, during the latter’s official visit to Ukraine, as reported on the President's website.
Both sides stressed the importance of implementing the Declaration on the Establishment of a Strategic Partnership between Ukraine and Georgia, signed during a visit by Poroshenko to Georgia in July 2017.
“They expressed mutual interest in the enhancement of inter-parliamentary ties between the two countries. Particularly, they discussed close coordination of positions within the international parliamentary assemblies, especially PACE, as well as international organizations,” noted the statement.
Both sides confirmed mutual support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both countries. Poroshenko expressed gratitude to the Georgian side for providing the opportunity for rehabilitation to Ukrainian soldiers wounded during the military operation in the Donbas as well as to members of the soldiers’ families.
Poroshenko also stated that the mechanism for sanctions against Russia is currently being improved, and that the Georgian side could join the process.
“This will help draw greater attention and stimulate Europe to continue sanctions against Russia. We can add the Georgian component for South Ossetia and Abkhazia,” noted the President.
Kobakhidze, in turn, noted that Ukraine and Georgia have “broad prospects for the enhancement of [their] political and economic cooperation.”
The parties also discussed topics related to the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationships between Ukraine and Georgia, which will be celebrated on July 4, 2018.
Ukraine and Georgia intend to join forces to achieve common goals, including membership in the European Union and NATO.
