Ukrainian peacekeeper from the UN mission dies from malaria in Congo

A Ukrainian soldier from the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) died in a hospital in Kampala, Uganda, reported Ukrainsky Novyny citing the statement from the MONUSCO headquarters.

"The Ukrainian officer who was a military observer in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has tragically died.The officer of the Main Directorate of Military Cooperation and Peacekeeping Operations of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Colonel Yuriy Politko, served in the city of Kitshanga, the Democratic Republic of the Congo”, reads the statement.

The MONUSCO headquarters received a letter from the Mission Medical Support Base in the city of Entebbe informing that Colonel Yuriy Politko died in the 4th level hospital in Kampala (Uganda) as a result of a severe form of malaria, on April 11, 2019.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 200 million cases of malaria are reported annually, 90% of which are in Africa.
