US representative Volker: Ukraine will be able to buy additional weapons from US
In an interview with Evropeyskaya Pravda, the U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker stated that the military assistance program for Ukraine provides both free weapons and those for sale.
“As you know, during the Obama administration, the U.S. also provided assistance to Ukraine in the security sphere, but there was a clear restriction: there could not be anything lethal. The Trump administration lifted this Obama-era restriction. This expands the ability of the United States to support Ukraine,” Volker said.
“Yes, Javelins will be part of the support, but it’s about much more. Our goal is to fill in the gaps in the armament of the Ukrainian army and increasing its ability to defend its territory. We will maintain assistance in the security field, which is provided free of charge, but at the same time Ukraine will have the right to buy those weapons that it lacks,” he said.
According to the U.S. special envoy, his country’s task is not to aggravate the conflict by providing lethal weapons, but to help Ukraine more effectively defend itself.
In November of last year, the American edition of BuzzFeed wrote that U.S. President Donald Trump does not want to provide assistance to Ukraine free of charge.
