Turchynov calls Russia’s actions in Syria a 'shameful farce'
The “victory” of the Russian Federation in Syria has turned into a shameful farce, says Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov, as reported on the National Security and Defense Council’s website.
Turchynov said that on December 31, Russian troops in Syria suffered more losses than during any other time of the entire military operation.
According to him, at least four Su-24 bombers, two Su-35S fighter aircraft, an An-72 military transport aircraft and an ammunition depot were destroyed at the Khmeimim Airbase.
It should be noted that the Russian Ministry of Defense has denied the destruction of the aircraft, but acknowledged the bombardment of the air base.
“Putin’s propaganda statement about the victory of the Russian military in Syria, with which he launched his fourth presidential election campaign, has turned into a shameful farce, and the military parade, which he took part in Syria, has become a funeral procession,” added the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council.
On December 11, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the withdrawal of Russian troops from Syria. He said that “in a little over two years, the Russian Armed Forces, together with the Syrian army, defeated the most efficient group of international terrorists.” On December 22, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu reported that this order had been implemented.
Russia has been fighting in Syria for more than two years. Many analysts believe that the true goal of Russia’s intervention in the conflict is the desire to increase its weight in the international arena and use the Syrian conflict in geopolitical bargaining with other world powers.
