Crimea may face hour-by-hour water supply
All regions of the Russian-annexed Crimean Peninsula may soon shift to an hour-by-hour water supply system, Vladimir Bazhenov, the Director General of the State Enterprise Voda Kryma, stated.
“I am afraid that soon the whole Crimea will receive water by the hour. There is no rain at this temperature. There is terrible evaporation of water in all surface reservoirs. Soon, daily water intake from reservoirs to the water supply network will equal evaporation into the sky. It applies to all reservoirs: Ayansky, Partisansky, Izobilnensky, Simferopolsky, Leninsky, Feodosiysky and so on,” said Bazhenov as quoted by the newspaper Krymskaya Gazeta.
The Crimean regions of Krasnogvardeysky, Nizhnegorsky, Pervomaysky and Sovetsky were all declared “emergency areas” due to draught.
85% of Crimea’s fresh water needs were met by Ukraine before Russia’s annexation of the peninsula in 2014. Water used to be received through the North Crimean canal, which connected the Dnieper River with the Crimea. Following Russia’s annexation, the supply of water stopped.
