Syrian anti-air defense opens fire at Israeli reconnaissance planes
The Syrian military opened fire on Israeli reconnaissance planes which had crossed the border, SANA reports, citing its own correspondent. This was also reported by the TV channel Al-Mayadin.
According to SANA, the incident took place in the airspace over the city of Quneitra in south-western Syria. The Syrian anti-air defense forces confronted the Israeli planes and forced them to leave the territory.
Al-Mayadin reported that guns fired shots at the Israeli planes.
On the evening of February 10, the Israeli military said that it had shot down an Iranian drone which crossed the Israeli border. The Israeli Air Force later conducted airstrikes against locations in Syria where Israel claims the Iranian-owned drone control systems were located. During the operation, the Syrian anti-air defense system shot down an Israeli F-16 fighter. The F-16 pilot was able to eject safely.
The White House supported Israel’s actions in Syria. “We support their right to protect themselves against the Syrian army and the Iran-backed militia in the south of Syria,” the US presidential administration reported. Washington called on Iran and its allies to stop acting “provocatively” and to start to work towards peace in the conflict-stricken region.
