Putin says he is waiting for Trump to fulfill his campaign promise regarding Russia
During the TV program News on Saturday with Sergey Brilev, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that he expects US President Donald Trump to fulfill his campaign promise regarding the improvement of Russian-American relations, Interfax reports.
“One of the [campaign] promises was to improve Russian-American relations,” Putin stated. “I hope that it will also happen. We are ready for this. The ball, I think, is on the American side, it is in their court.”
Putin stressed: “We are ready for the development, deepening and normalization of relations with the USA. Instruments can be different, including personal meetings.”
Putin believes that a potential meeting with Trump is appropriate and useful, but, according to him, it is necessary that the US internal political situation allows for such a meeting.
“You see, it was discussed from the very beginning, following the election of President Trump. And from the very beginning we answered that we believe that such meetings are not only possible but appropriate,” Putin stated.
On Saturday, Putin’s press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, stated that during the last telephone conversation between the presidents, the two discussed that Vienna could serve as the city for their bilateral meeting. However, there are no specific agreements regarding this issue yet.
President Trump supported Russia’s return to the club of most influential states of the world before his flight to the G7 Summit on Friday.
European members of the Group of seven are convinced that it is impossible for Russia to join before the Ukrainian issue is solved, as German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated.
