Ukrainian President terminated citizenship of 5,200 people over one year

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko terminated the citizenship of 5,200 people in 2017, according to data from the Presidential Administration.

Decrees on termination of citizenship were issued on the grounds of the withdrawal from citizenship for 4,296 persons, loss of citizenship for 47 persons, and international treaties for 825 persons.

The most well-known examples are the terminations of the citizenships of Mikheil Saakashvili and MP Andrey Artemenko. At the same time, Poroshenko did not, for example, terminate the citizenship, of Roman Nasirov, who has a British passport.

From June 7, 2014 (the day of the inauguration of the President) to January 1, 2018, Poroshenko terminated the Ukrainian citizenship about 23,000 people.

During 2017, 957 persons were given Ukrainian citizenship of Ukraine, 94 of whom were stateless.
