Ukrainian President suggests that each EU country rebuild one city in the Donbas
President Petro Poroshenko proposed an initiative for every country of the European Union to prepare a targeted program of patronage over certain cities of the Ukrainian Donbas, contributing to their revival and the restoration of their infrastructure. He wrote about his proposal on Facebook after meeting with the President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, George Tsereteli, who returned from the East of Ukraine.
"During the conversation, I proposed an important initiative to rebuild the Donbas, which is to ensure that each EU country has prepared a targeted program of patronage over certain cities of the Ukrainian Donbas, contributing to their revival and restoration of infrastructure," Poroshenko said.
Poroshenko and Tsereteli also discussed ways to counteract Russian aggression through the initiative to deploy a UN peacekeeping mission in the Donbas, stressed the need to continue sanctions against the Russian Federation and agreed to continue efforts to release Ukrainian political prisoners and Ukrainian hostages from Russian prisons.
Last year, the Ministry for Temporarily Occupied Territories and Internally Displaced Persons launched a portal on projects aiming to restore the Donbas. Local governments can use the portal to publish data on the needs of region, which will allow donors to understand where to direct assistance, and later be able to report on the use of funds.
