Ukrainian president proposes that Europe create a coalition ‘to combat Russia’s aggression’
European countries should create a new coalition to combat “Russia’s aggression,” as Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko stated on his Facebook page.
“Today we are in a situation where Russia has launched an undeclared war against all of us. That is why, given this situation, we should think about new coalitions, new programs or approaches,” the Ukrainian President wrote.
The question of responding to Russia’s actions in Europe was raised by Poroshenko during the session “Central and Eastern Europe: a new agenda for the continent?” at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Commenting on the discussion, Poroshenko noted that he considers it necessary to unite European countries to respond to Moscow’s challenge. “We should have a common coalition, a common response, and a common program to counter aggression,” he stressed.
In a video recording of the discussion attached to the post, Poroshenko calls the construction of the Nord Stream–2 gas pipeline, which bypasses Ukraine, as a solely political decision and accuses Gazprom of “attempts to bribe European countries.”
On 18 January the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a law on the reintegration of the Donbas. The law recognizes Russia as an aggressor-country, and certain districts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions are designated as Russian-occupied territories.
