Poroshenko enacts decision of National Security Council on strengthening Ukrainian defense capabilities

President Petro Poroshenko enacted by decree the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine dated May 7, 2019 “on measures to strengthen the defense capabilities of the state”.

“In the document, it is recognized that there is a need to continue developing conceptual approaches to strengthening state defense in the face of prolonged aggression from the Russian Federation,” the press service of the presidential administration of Ukraine reported.

According to the issued decree, an interdepartmental work group is being created to prepare proposals for strengthening the state’s defense capabilities. Deputy Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Serhiy Kryvonos, was appointed chairman of the interdepartmental work group.

 In particular, the interdepartmental work group was tasked with developing proposals for the National Security Council on improving the system for territorial defense, raising the level of military-patriotic education among the youth, training the military reserve of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations, as well as countering information warfare targeting Ukraine.

The interdepartmental work group includes Ukraine’s Deputy Ministers of Defense, Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ukraine’s Minister of Education and Science, Ukraine’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Ukraine’s Minister of Veteran Affairs, Ukraine’s Minister of Information Policy, the Chairman of Ukraine’s Security Service, the Commander of Ukraine’s National Guard and the Commander of the Land Forces of Ukraine’s Armed Forces.

The interdepartmental work group may also include representatives of the committee on national security and defense issues in Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s Presidential Administration and the National Institute for Strategic Studies.
