UN Security Council began to discuss the situation in Abkhazia and South Ossetia

The UN Security Council has begun to discuss the continuing aggravation of the situation in Georgia, primarily in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, as a result of Russia’s provocative actions. The talks were initiated by Ukraine at Georgia’s request on March 28.

Volodymyr Yelchenko, the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations reported the matter as part of exclusive commentary to LB.ua.

The Ukrainian delegation drew the Security Council’s attention to the so-called "Parliamentary Elections" in Abkhazia on March 12 and 26, and the planned "Referendums" in occupied South Ossetia to change its name and illegitimately join the Russian Federation. The delegation also informed Council members of the further militarization of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, as well as the violation of human rights by the occupation authorities of these regions.

"Russia’s provocative actions are similar to its policy of militarization in the Crimea and its complete disregard for human rights on the Ukrainian peninsula,” said Yelchenko at a meeting of the Security Council.

The delegation of Ukraine also invited members of the Council to adopt a statement for the press, which would confirm the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia. This initiative was blocked by Russia.

The overwhelming majority of the UN Security Council member states condemned the aggressive policy of the Russian Federation, expressed respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and urged Moscow to stop the occupation of Georgian territories.

The Ukrainian delegation plans to continue to keep the Georgian issue on the agenda of the UN Security Council for the time being.
