Ukrainian Intelligence: Russia is transforming the Crimea into a military base
Russia is deploying new weapon systems and military equipment in annexed Crimea in order to turn the peninsula into a military base, according to a representative of the Main Intelligence Department of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, Vadym Skibitsky on Channel 5. Skibitsky said that the biggest threat to Ukraine is the equipment capable of carrying nuclear weapons.
According to Ukrainian intelligence, Russia is increasing the number of submarines, frigates, and missile boats that are able to use advanced missile systems. Russia is also strengthening its air force, which will subsequently place the whole Ukrainian territory within striking range from the Crimea.
The Main Intelligence Department of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry does not exclude the threat of an open attack from Russia. It is closely monitoring the movement of weapons and military equipment, Skibitsky stated.
On Tuesday, Ukrainian intelligence released information about regular supplies of weapons and equipment from Russia to the Donbas including Т-64 tanks and Armored Personnel Carriers. Moreover, two Russian radar intelligence systems have been deployed in the area of Horlivka, the statement reads.
On August 10th, the Federal Security Service of Russia stated that they prevented terrorist acts in Crimea which were allegedly organized by Ukrainian Intelligence. Kiev denied all accusations, calling them provocations of Russian Security Services. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko tasked the army to strengthen its combat readiness along the border with annexed Crimea.
