Ukrainian Defense Minister: We are beginning to actively reform the army

Ukrainian Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak discussed the reform of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as reported  by the press service of the Ministry.

“We are beginning to actively reform the army. The President of Ukraine has given us such a task. That’s why I set the goal to the heads of structural units of the Ministry of Defense and General staff— to establish clear plans for the implementation of the reforms according to areas of activities specifying its objectives and responsible performers.” Poltorak said.

According to him, the leadership of the country and the military are working towards achieving the criteria necessary for EU and NATO membership.

The Minister added that in order to implement a decision of the President of Ukraine in 2014—2015, a comprehensive evaluation of the defense and security sector was conducted, resulting in the preparation of key reforms in the military. In January 2016, the government approved the Concept for the Development of Security and Defense Sector of Ukraine which, after a review by the National Security and Defense Council, has to be approved by the President.
