Ukraine reduced its gas imports by one third

In 2016 Ukraine reduced the amount of imported gas by 32.7% (approximately 5.4 billion cubic meters) as compared to 2015, to 11.8 cubic meters, according to data published by PJSC Ukrtransgaz.

In December 2016, gas imports totaled 1.7 billion cubic meters of gas – 3.7 times more than in December 2015 (444 million cubic meters).  1.3 billion cubic meters was imported from Slovakia, 227 million cubic meters from Hungary, and 129.7 million cubic meters from Poland.  

As was reported, Ukraine has not imported natural gas under the contract with Gazprom for 13 months relying solely on western suppliers for gas imports.  

In January Ukraine imported 914.8 million cubic meters of gas, in February 1.3 billion cubic meters, in March 478.4 million cubic meters, in April 245 million cubic meters, in May 96.4 million cubic meters, in May 96.4 million cubic meters, in June 19.7 million cubic meters, in July 409.6 million cubic meters, in August 1.4 billion cubic meters, and approximately 1.5 cubic meters a month during September, October, and November.

According to the State Statistical Service, in 2015 Ukraine imported 16.5 billion cubic meters of gas for $4.5 billion, which includes imports from Europe amounting to 10.3 billion cubic meters for $2.8 billion, and 6.1 billion cubic meters from the Russian Federation for $1.7 billion.

Ukrtransgaz, 100% of which belongs to NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine, operates the main gas pipeline system as well as 12 of the country’s underground gas storages.

Earlier it was reported that Ukraine had accused Russia of reducing gas transits through the country.
