Tuka: Ukraine began building a wall along the border with Russia
George Tuka, the Deputy Minister for the Temporarily Occupied Territories and Internally Displaced Persons, reported that the Ukrainian authorities are preparing to build a wall between the Luhansk region and Russia. According to him, construction of the wall has already started. Geologists and surveyors are hard at work on the Russian-Ukrainian border.
“The brigades of geologists and surveyors have already arrived. The works on the study of soil and preparatory works for technical assignment are ongoing. Two powerful groups, which are moving along the border towards each other work there. As I ultimately learned, two plots were already sown with rye by local farmers despite all of our warnings,” 112 Ukraine TV Channel quotes Tuka as saying.
According to the Deputy Minister, the planned objects will be built on the border by 2018 if funding proceeds normally. Initially, Ukrainian authorities called the project “the Wall” and then the former Prime Minister suggested renaming it to “European Val[barrier].”
The former Prime Minister of Ukraine, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, first proposed building a wall on the border with the Russian Federation. In June 2015, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the project, which was worth about $150 million
