Ukraine appeals to Interpol over exhibition of Scythian gold in Amsterdam museum
Ukraine sent an appeal to Interpol regarding an exhibition of Scythian gold in Amsterdam that Kyiv insists is Ukrainian property, as reported by the Ukrainian Prosecutor's Office of the Crimea.
"The Prosecutor's Office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea carries out… a pre-trial investigation into criminal proceedings based on Allard Pierson Museum of the University of Amsterdam’s refusal to return the museum exhibits of the ‘Crimea – the Golden Island in the Black Sea’ exhibition, which are the property of the Ukrainian state," the message says.
The Pechersk District Court in Kyiv has requested that the items be confiscated by Interpol.
"The resolution of the investigating judge has been sent to Interpol with the aim of ensuring an international investigation into the property," the Crimean prosecutor's office explained.
In February of 2014, a collection of Scythian gold from five Ukrainian museums was taken to Amsterdam where it was presented at the exhibition in the Allard Pierson Museum. The exhibition ended on August 31, but after the annexation of the Crimea, the Dutch party refused to return the exhibits to the peninsular museums.
The Court of Amsterdam promised to make a decision on the case of Scythian gold on December 14th.
