The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved the activities for the day in memory of the genocide of Crimean Tatars
On the 5th of May, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved a plan to honor the memory of the genocide of the Crimean Tatars. The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine reported that all activities were discussed with the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people. The details of these activities were not revealed.
“Please prepare these resolutions in accordance with the regulations,” Prime Minister Vladimir Groysman said at the Cabinet meeting on Thursday.
At this time, the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine also introduced a draft resolution detailing the preparation of activities for the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence.
On the 12th of November 2015, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine recognized the 1944 banishment of Crimean Tatars as a genocide.
The 18th of May is Memorial Day for victims of this genocide. On this day in 1944, the first tier of Crimean Tatars, more than 180,000 people, were deported to Central Asia.
On Memorial Day, public events are typically held, including a memorial service in the center of the Crimean capital of Simferopol. However, after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in March 2014, these activities were banned.
A number of events will be hosted in Kiev and throughout Ukraine. These include mass meetings and thematic school lessons dedicated to the anniversary of the genocide.
