Russian warships approached Latvia’s borders again
The Armed Forces of Latvia have again discovered Russian warships near the country’s borders.
The National Armed Forces of Latvia reported this on Twitter.
Ships were recorded twice during the day on Sunday.
“In the Latvian exclusive economic zone, at a distance of 11 nautical miles from the border, on October 16, Parchim-class corvette Kazanets from the Armed Forces of Russia has been identified,” the statement says.
In addition, at a distance of eight nautical miles from the territorial waters, a Gorin-class tugboat from the Russian navy was detected.
Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine and the aggravation of relations between the West and Russia, Russian warships and aircraft have been recorded close to the air and maritime borders of the Baltic States increasingly often.
In particular, in 2015 Russian military planes were noticed near the borders of Latvia more than 270 times.
Despite the fact that they do not violate the air and sea space of states, in the case of aircraft they pose a threat to civil aviation.
The Baltic countries and the United Kingdom have repeatedly stated that Russia aims to demonstrate its power and test NATO’s response by flying near NATO borders.
