Russian opposition to hold demonstration in memory of Nemtsov on anniversary of his assassination

Organizers of a demonstration to commemorate the death of Boris Nemtsov will give notice about the event to Moscow’s mayoral office on the 12th of February.  This was posted on the event organizer’s Facebook page.

The demonstration will be held on February 27th on the one-year anniversary of Nemtsov's assassination.  Participants plan to walk from Slavyanskaya Square to the Great Moscow River Bridge, where Nemtsov was killed.

The Facebook post also invited all concerned parties to take part in the rally to demonstrate to the authorities that they have failed to intimidate the opposition.

“They weren’t just firing at him, they were shooting at all of us.  They were trying to intimidate and force us to hide as cowards in our warm, safe houses.  Boris Nemtsov was always an example of how we should act and what results we can achieve.  The best way to remember him is to act.  The new year gives us a chance to turn the situation around in our country by legal and peaceful means.  If we continue to simply endure and not act, then chaos will reign in our future,” the post continued.  It was signed by more than 30 people, some of whom were politicians, civil activists, human rights defenders and journalists.

Commemoration rallies will also be held in other cities such as Nizhny Novgorod.

Boris Nemtsov was killed on the evening of February 27th, 2015 in Moscow.  Five citizens of Chechnya have since been detained in connection to the murder.  On the 18th of November, the court sanctioned the arrest of the alleged organizer of the murder, Ruslan Muhudinov.  He was a former officer of the battalion of the Chechen Ministry of Internal Affairs.
