Russia tests long-range aviation rockets
Russia has begun testing hypersonic missiles to be used for long-range aviation. The prospective weapons are being tested from the Tu-22M supersonic bomber. This was reported by Lenta.ru, citing a source in the Defense Ministry.
According to this source, the new missiles, which can develop speeds of five to six times the speed of sound, could be used to destroy ground targets and to combat enemy ships.
The source added that the testing of these possible weapons will last several more years, and that the adoption of the new missiles into service is expected to happen in 2020 and 2021.
“The development of these missiles is conducted within the framework of an extensive program on the creation of hypersonic equipment for the Aerospace Forces, for the navy and for strategic nuclear forces. Several samples of equipment have already been turned into series, and some are still in the research stage,” the source added.
It recently became known that Russian troops will be equipped with missiles with a new warhead, which were developed on the basis of new physical principles.
Russian troops have also received the first brigade set of the newest Buk-M3 air defense systems.
