Russia called on Trump to reach out to Cuba
A new line against Cuba, declared by US President Donald Trump, is a return to the rhetoric of the Cold War, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated. The department noted Trump’s position was regrettable.
On Friday, Trump said he was canceling the Obama administration's deal to normalize relations with Cuba. He noted that Washington would not remove sanctions from the government in Havana unless all political prisoners were released, freedom of speech and assembly would be respected, and as long as free elections under international supervision were not held in the country.
“We think that no one should have any doubts that the arrogant style of doing business with Cuba is unpromising. The events of the last half century are evidence to that. Haven’t the politicians in Washington and political hacks in Miami learned anything,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in their statement. The department confirmed “solidarity with Cuba - a friendly, peace-loving country, and an authoritative member of the international community.”
The commentary of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stresses that “We are for dialogue, cooperation and bridging, and communication without dictatorship and attempts to interfere from outside into the internal affairs of sovereign states.”
The department urged Trump to become accustomed to the sound of the “almost unanimous voice of the world community,” which stands for the establishment of relations with Cuba.
