Russian naval ships to be equipped with Pantsir-SM missile systems
Small missile ships of the Russian Navy will be equipped with the close-in weapon system (CIWS) "Pantsir-SM", which will provide the highest level of vessel security, Izvestia newspaper reported.
Russia's new Buyan-M small missile ships will be armed with these missile systems.
Compared to their land-based "Pantsir-S1" counterparts, the naval air defense missile system has double the capability of detecting and destroying targets, able to detect all air and water activity at a distance up to 75 km. The anti-aircraft complex is capable of striking targets at a distance of 40 km.
The ships will also be equipped with modern radar using an active electronically scanned array (AESA). The unique radar is capable of detecting low-flying cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and surface targets and relaying their location to anti-air defense missiles and rapid-fire artillery—all in a fraction of a second.
The first ship with new radar is currently undergoing testing and is scheduled for launch next year.
