Mogherini: EU considers maintaining Ukraine's status as gas transit country to be important
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, stated that the European Union still believes that it is strategically important to maintain the role of Ukraine as a transit country for gas, Interfax-Ukraine reported.
“The EU Council previously noted that it believes it to be strategically important for Ukraine to maintain their status as a transit country for gas,” Mogherini said at a press conference in Brussels, replying to a question about her views on the Nord Stream 2 project. The Nord Stream 2 project was recently frozen as part of the package of EU sanctions against Russia. Earlier, the leaders of the Visegrad Four countries opposed the Nord Stream 2 project.
The Nord Stream 2 would enhance the capacity of Nord Stream I, which is already operational. The Nord Stream 2 AG Company that is engaged in the construction planning for the pipeline, is part of the Russian company Gazprom, but is operated 100% through its branch office in the Netherlands. Over the summer, the former Chancellor of Germany, Gerhard Schröder, who has long been well-known for his favorable attitude towards Russia, became the Head of its Board of Directors.
