Ministry of Defense of Latvia: The Russian threat remains
There is a low probability of a direct military invasion in Latvia. However, the security situation in the Baltic region remains tense. According to Mixnews, this was stated by the Latvian Minister of Defense, Raimonds Bergmanis.
On Tuesday, at a private meeting, the government went through the ministry’s analysis of military threats to the state. The government last examined such analyses in September last year.
On Wednesday, Bergmanis stated that nothing has changed since then and that the security situation remains tense. “Threats from Russia are still there,” he said.
The ministry prepares these analyses every year. They are then reviewed by the National Security Council and approved by the Cabinet.
The Zobens 2016, or Sword 2016, field tactical exercises took place from the 19th to the 25th of September in the Latvian city of Rēzekne. According to the American consultant of the ministry, Philip Karber, the terrain in Latvia, and the Baltic States overall, is suitable for a successful defense in the event of a Russian invasion.
