Latvia reported presence of Russian submarine near its cost
The Armed Forces of Latvia detected a Russian submarine not far from the Latvian border once again.
"On April 30, a Russian Kilo class submarine together with the Victor Konetsky sea tug boat were detected in the exclusive economic zone at a distance of 8 nautical miles from the border of Latvia," informed the National Armed Forces of Latvia on their Twitter page.
As the relations between Russia and NATO continue to deteriorate, Russia has stepped up the activity of its fleet and aviation in the Baltics. Over the past year, the governments of the Baltic countries and the UK have repeatedly complained about the violations of their airspace by Russian aircraft.
In December last year, NATO fighter jets intercepted a Russian military aircraft at the Latvian border, and a few days later a Russian warship approached the sea border of the country.
While NATO member countries consider these incidents to be a warning as to the Russian readiness to use force, the Russian Federation calls the flights of its bombers "routine patrolling."
