Latvia recorded the presence of a Russian reconnaissance ship near its borders
A Russian reconnaissance ship was detected not far from the borders of Latvia. This was reported by the Latvian National Armed forces on Twitter.
"On October 14, in the Latvian exclusive economic zone, 16.1 nautical miles from Latvian territorial waters, naval forces identified an Alpinist-class reconnaissance ship Zhigulevsk of the Russian armed forces,'' the statement says.
Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine and the aggravation of relations between the West and Russia, Russian warships and aircraft have increasingly been detected near the air and maritime borders of the Baltic States. In particular, in 2015 Russian military planes were noticed not far from the borders of Latvia more than 270 times.
Although they have not violated Latvia’s borders, the Russian aircraft at least pose a threat to civil aviation.
The Baltic countries and the UK have repeatedly stated that Russia often demonstrates its power and tests NATO’s combat responses with flights of its own aircraft near their borders.
