Ukraine will work with western partners to tighten sanctions against Russia for recognizing 'documents' of the separatist republics

Ukrainian leadership intends to hold negotiations with western partners regarding a possible tightening of sanctions against Russia in connection with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s issuing of a decree to recognise the “documents” of the separatist republics, reported Oleksiy Makeyev, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

“The President clearly specified that such destructive acts of the Kremlin must be brought to discussion in the EU, with our main partners, not to ease the sanctions, but to tighten them on account of such an aggressive policy from the Kremlin. And we will work with our main partners so that sanction pressure on Russia, as the sole instrument of political pressure, persists and is utilised,”  Makeyev told reporters on Thursday in Kyiv.

He noted that the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted immediately to this decree by Russia, by stating that the Kremlin had violated its obligations according to the Minsk agreements.

“We will follow very closely how other states react. But the fact that the Kremlin’s actions were condemned by the EU, US, Germany, OSCE, France, our main foreign partners, testifies to the fact that their assessment of the Kremlin’s actions completely agrees with ours,” the diplomat noted.
