Former Polish President: Ukraine should abandon its hopes of joining NATO and the EU

Former President of Poland Aleksander Kwaśniewski is convinced that Ukraine should not even dream about joining the North Atlantic Alliance. This was reported by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

“Ukraine should abandon its dream of becoming a NATO member. Also, now it's not worth talking about reaching the goal of becoming a full member of the EU,” the ex-president of Poland said.

At the same time, Kwaśniewski himself, according to his words, “has nothing against Kiev's goals to become a full member of NATO at some point.”

Speaking at the event organized by the Koerber Foundation in Warsaw, he expressed concern about the security of his country, the Baltic states and Moldova.

In addition, Kwaśniewski said that the situation in this region is the least safe in last 17 years since Poland joined NATO. The situation, according to him, has developed due to high activity from the Russian military in the region, especially near the borders of Estonia and Latvia, and in close proximity to Moldova.

The former head of Poland also stressed that, because of the exercises of the Russian Federation near the eastern borders of NATO, it should be expected that during the summit of NATO member countries on July 8-9 in Warsaw the decision to strengthen the Alliance's military presence in Poland and the Baltic countries will be made.
