EU to discuss referendum on Ukraine’s association at upcoming Summit

On Sunday, a European official told UNIAN that from the 28th – 29th of June in Brussels, the EU Summit will discuss the consequences of the referendum in Great Britain on the exit from the EU as well as the referendum in the Netherlands on Ukraine’s Association Agreement.

According to him, on Tuesday, 27 leaders of the EU member countries during a dinner with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron, will hold a discussion on the UK's exit from the EU.

"We expect that he will tell us about the results and the situation that exists now. It will also make it possible for us to share our views concerning the next steps. At this stage we expect him to invoke Article 50 (the legislation that sets out how a member state can leave the EU)," an official specified.

On the same day, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, wants to discuss with the leaders the consequences of the referendum on Ukraine’s Association Agreement that was held in the country in March.

"The Summit will be a place where the process of resolving concerns expressed during the referendum will start," a European official emphasized. Issues such as migration and domestic markets are on the agenda.

Moreover, on Tuesday, a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will take place where the parties will discuss the future agreement between the EU and the Alliance which will be formalized at the NATO Summit in Warsaw.

Also the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, will give a brief presentation of the foreign policy strategy.

A European official also informed that an informal meeting of 27 leaders will take place on Wednesday.

"It will be the first meeting without Great Britain where leaders will discuss the process of the so-called “divorce” and the future of the 27 EU members," an official noted.
