NATO expects Ukrainian national security law to delimit functions of law enforcement agencies
NATO Representative to Ukraine Alexander Vinnikov anticipates that the Verkhovna Rada will pass a law on national security which will clearly delimit the functions of the law enforcement agencies.
The head of NATO Representation to Ukraine made a statement to this effect at a conference in Kyiv.
“From our perspective, a law on national security is critical, the basis and foundation for delimiting the functions of Ukraine’s law enforcement agencies. This law will provide synergy between all the agencies. For more than 20 months already, NATO’s representatives and advisory mission have been collaborating with the Ukrainian structures in order to share experience and best practices for the drafting of this law. This process has been underway since the passing of the first reading several months ago,” he said.
Vinnikov noted that the Alliance will closely monitor the drafting of the national security bill for the second reading.
“We urge our Ukrainian colleagues to ensure that there is a clear delimitation of powers between the different agencies in this sphere. This will enable us to understand the structure that is going to be used in Ukraine, and it will give us the opportunity to offer our financial assistance to Ukraine more purposefully,” he said.
LB.ua reported earlier that the Ukrainian parliament predicts that the national security bill will be approved in the second reading and in its entirety as early as the following plenary week.
The bill was passed in its first reading on April 5.
