Muzhenko: Ukraine interested in US assistance to strengthen the security of military storage facilities

During a meeting with the defense attaché at the US Embassy in Ukraine, Thomas Wofford, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Viktor Muzhenko said that Kyiv is interested in engaging American specialists in measures to strengthen the security of weapons depos, bases and warehouses.

"The Armed Forces of Ukraine demonstrate progress in reforming and moving to NATO standards, thanks to advisory assistance provided by US advisers, as well as training personnel units with the participation of American instructors," Muzhenko said on October 6.

Earlier, the Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Defense has appealed to the President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, with a call to dismiss Viktor Muzhenko. This happened on October 4 at a meeting of the committee, dedicated, in particular, to the incident that occurred in Kalynivka, located in the Vinnytsia region.

Muzhenko earlier rejected accusations by his opponents of inactivity during the events in Kalynivka.

The fire and explosions at ammunition depots near Kalynivka began on the evening of September 26. As a result, more than 30 thousand people were evacuated from Kalynivka and nearby villages. Two people were injured and hospitalized in medical institutions. This time the fire was quickly localized and extinguished, unlike in previous similar incidents; by the evening of September 28, almost all the evacuees could return home.

Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko said that the Prosecutor’s General Office does not exclude the possibility that an act of sabotage was the cause of the fire and explosions of ammunition at the depo and, in particular, the possibility that a detonator had been laid there.

The Military Prosecutor's Office of the Central Region of Ukraine is investigating the case of the explosions as an “act of sabotage".
